My New Year’s Resolutions

Time to party!

Time to party!

Happy New Year, everybody! Here’s to a wonderful 2016 for all of us. I sincerely hope you’re all resting well and taking good care of yourselves.

As always, January 1st is the best day to make a bunch of half-baked resolutions and never follow through on any of them. In lieu of that, here is my list of New Year’s Resolutions!

  • Don’t watch Idolm@ster
  • Get better taste
  • Become a magical girl without having to sign a contract
  • Pick up a girl in a dungeon
  • Destroy Twitter

I’m kidding, of course (…or am I?!) But seriously, I do have some cool things in store for this blog in 2016, so let me tell you all about it.

The Ecchi Scenes in Sword Art Online: Progressive

img000021The best/worst thing about Sword Art Online is that it is entirely fanservice. Some of it is the ecchi/harem kind, but most of it is the gamer masturbation kind. It’s not gonna challenge you particularly, but SAO definitely deserves credit for being good at what it is. And as a light novel connoisseur and all-round otaku trash, SAO falls squarely in my comfort zone.

You might like to imagine that I consume SAO with an expression like Kirito’s in the above picture. I have not yet gotten to the stage of wearing ladies’ undergarments on my head, however.

The spinoff series Sword Art Online: Progressive follows the time-held SAO tradition of not being the most progressive thing in the world. The world still revolves around Kirito. That said, Progressive is definitely a smoother read than Kawahara’s earlier writing, and the attention to worldbuilding is particularly impressive. The game mechanics play an important role in the plot beyond showcasing how awesome Kirito is. There’s also a heavier focus on the social dynamics of the game, even if most of it is explained to the reader via exposition dumps. So far, I like it better than the main series.

However, today I am not here to talk about the fascinating worldbuilding in SAO: Progressive. Today, I am here to talk about boobies.

This should go without saying, but please don’t read this post if you are allergic to ecchi. Also, NSFW warning.

Reflections on Writing, Blogging and Translating

Today, I turn twenty one.

I don’t feel old. I used to fear growing up, but I’ve come to the conclusion that even if the passage of time causes me to lose things, there are many more things that I will gain, simply by being alive.

At the same time, I’m amazed at how quickly time flies! It only feels like yesterday when I started up an anime blog with a stupid name. My blog still has a stupid name, but now it gets well over 1.5k views every day. I don’t post as often as the more dedicated bloggers, but I’m glad my readers have found something to keep coming back to. I still blush whenever someone leaves a kind comment.

Why You Should Support the English Light Novel Industry (And How You Can Do it)

sao index

2014 was a great year for English light novels. I’d say LN publishing was revitalised last year, thanks to the release of big name titles (and not just SAO and Index). I suppose this is a side effect of the oversaturation of LN adaptations in the anime industry right now. There’s no better time to get into the LNs, and I fully expect 2015 to be a lucrative year as well.

Why You Should Buy Light Novels

First of all, they’re cheap. The translations are a whole lot better than the fan translations, and most importantly, I think the success of these titles will pave the way for more quality translations of Japanese novels. Ideally, I’d like to see more Japanese literature beyond light novels being published over here. There’s a growing potential market.

2014: Year in Retrospect

Nisekoi-01-3It’s that time of the year, guys! Time to look back on all the Japanese cartoons and declare how shit they all were!

I’m joking, of course. While I haven’t actually watched enough anime this year to string together a top 10 anime list, I did enjoy the stuff I got around to watching. I also feel that this was a productive year for me as an anime fan and for the aniblogsphere in general.

Time for the highlights!
