I’m Graduating Tomorrow

k-onI’ve been watching K-ON! lately, a cute little show which you may have heard of.

Despite not being much of a fan of those “cute girls doing cute things” shows, I did like this oneIt captured a specific, ephemeral moment in time with seemingly effortless grace. “Finding the magic in the everyday” is a recurring theme in Naoko Yamada’s work, and this was definitely on display with K-ON!.

However, unlike many viewers, I didn’t cry when I watched the ending of K-ON!. I wasn’t like Azusa, who didn’t want those blissful high school days to end. I suppose my attitude was more like that of the four seniors, who had appreciated their lives at high school to the fullest but were now looking forward to what the future would bring. Even though I have no idea where I’ll be in a year’s time, the future has stopped feeling scary.

I’m graduating from university tomorrow, and I don’t have any regrets.

Some Concrete Revolutio-related Stuff + I’m Hiring!

First off, I recently collaborated on a post with my friend iblessall about the official English translations of the Concrete Revolutio anime. Please check it out on Mage in a Barrel!

Speaking of Concrete Revolutio, lately I’ve been translating some of the interviews and commentary posted on the official website. I’ve been doing it on and off in my spare time, so it’s gonna take a while before I finish translating everything, but I’m super stoked about this anime and I hope it lives on as a cult classic. A few weeks ago, I translated some commentary by the director and scriptwriter, which I hope you find interesting!

I’m also hoping to write some articles in the future about the cultural history of kaiju movies, tokusatsu, magical girls and some of the other motifs used in Concrete Revolutio. I hope this will be of interest even to people who haven’t watched or didn’t enjoy the anime. That said, this will require lots of independent research and some rewatching of Concrete Revolutio, so I plan to take my time with this little project.

In other news, I’m hiring a social media coordinator! I’m also giving away a free 20% discount voucher for Madman’s online shop. Details below the cut!

Applications are now closed. Thanks very much to everyone who applied!

My Fan Translation Thesis is Finally Complete! + Life/Anime Updates

1361671440465

The long haul is finally over! After almost a year of research and writing, I’ve finally finished my honours thesis. It’s around 18,000 words in total. (I know!) I still have to format the thesis and get it checked by my supervisor one more time before I submit it, but all the hard work has been done.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I can email the draft to anyone interested. Just let me know via the comments or Twitter. All feedback is welcome!

Here’s the abstract below:

Reflections on Writing, Blogging and Translating

Today, I turn twenty one.

I don’t feel old. I used to fear growing up, but I’ve come to the conclusion that even if the passage of time causes me to lose things, there are many more things that I will gain, simply by being alive.

At the same time, I’m amazed at how quickly time flies! It only feels like yesterday when I started up an anime blog with a stupid name. My blog still has a stupid name, but now it gets well over 1.5k views every day. I don’t post as often as the more dedicated bloggers, but I’m glad my readers have found something to keep coming back to. I still blush whenever someone leaves a kind comment.

Advertising New Anime Blogs [Liebster Award]

The year is 2014. Japanese cartoons featuring googly-eyed anime girls have taken over the world. What better way to spend your days in this post-apocalyptic world than to start a blog where you can freely complain write about your love of anime?

In all seriousness, I really encourage anime fans to express themselves and to get involved in the community. So here’s a post advertising some up-and-coming blogs under the guise of an award.

What Anime Looks Like To People Who Don’t Watch Anime

remiq.net_7064

I think everyone has experienced that awkward moment when someone who does not watch anime walks in on you watching anime… at the worst possible timing. Damn you, fanservice scenes!
