Earlier today, Crunchyroll launched a new weekly column called “Found in Translation”. It’s super cool stuff. Like, wow, it totally blew my mind and changed my religion. You guys just have to read it, I don’t know who this “Frog-kun” person is but he’s so wise and sagely and good-looking and–
…yeah, it was me…
I wrote a column about the translation choices in the Re:ZERO anime and light novel. Please give it a read when you have time!
Apparently, this will be a weekly thing, so look forward to a translation-themed feature article on Crunchyroll every week. I’ve added a link to my CR writer profile on the header of my blog, so you can find my writing there any time. While my views do not represent Crunchyroll, I will be using this platform to raise awareness about translation issues and promote some particular English-language releases that catch my eye. Wish me luck!
Now what will happen to this blog…
Luckily, I won’t be retiring this blog anytime soon. There are a few reasons for this:
- There are some translation-related topics that I’m simply not allowed to talk about on Crunchyroll. I can’t specify, but I’m sure you can imagine what they are.
- I want to write about things besides translation too, as it turns out.
So what will get posted here instead of at Crunchyroll?
- The nerdy, self-indulgent, quasi-academic editorials that are only tangentially related to the latest anime
- The shitposts
- Anything not related to translation, basically
Example: I’m reading a light novel called 12-gatsu no Veronica and it makes me cry evry tiem, so I’ll probably write about that when I finish it. It’s a crime that it hasn’t been translated anywhere.
Speaking of light novels, it’s not too late to participate in the Summer Reading Program at English Light Novels! We’re discussing the first volume of Re:ZERO and the standalone novel Tabi ni Deyou. If you’ve read or are planning to read either of those two novels, feel free to hop in. It’s always nice to hear from fellow light novel fans. (Also, shout out to my friend Melody for becoming a new staff member there.)
Finally, I’d like to announce that I’m attending the Madman Anime Festival in Melbourne on Saturday the 3rd of September. I’m very excited about seeing Tomohiko Ito and Shingo Adachi in person, and I’m also looking forward to Tiffany Grant and Matt Greenfield’s panel about adapting scripts for English dubs. If you’re in town, give me a shout via twitter or email or something! I’d love to meet up.

Just kidding, and congrats on the Crunchyroll posts. Also, thank you for not abandoning your blog and all of its other awesome anime stuff. I’ll try to look out for the CR posts in the future though. However I have not read the Re; zero post because I have only watch the first arc of it. I started and by the final fight scene I got a little too into it (to the point that I’m cheering for Subaru to win like it was a football game) so I’m going to wait and binge it on Thanksgiving.
Anyways, thanks again for doing what you do and hope to see new and amazing things in the future both here and on CR. I know it’s cheesy (especially coming from a dark lord such as myself) but remember to just do you and not over work yourself.
Luckily, the article only discusses the first arc of the anime/light novel, so you can read it anytime.
